Root Canal Treatment (RCT)

Root Canal Treatment (RCT)

Every tooth is made up of 3 layers: the outermost white layer called enamel. The 2nd yellow layer is called Dentine and the innermost Dental Pulp consisting of nerves and blood vessels.
If the tooth decay/ cavity is limited to the first two layers (enamel and dentin), it can be corrected with Filling/ Restoration. In case the tooth decay reaches the third layer of the Pulp, it causes inflammation or infection of pulp, a Root Canal treatment (RCT) or Endodontic Treatment is needed.
Root Canal Treatment, RCT, also known as Endodontic Treatment is a procedure done when the tooth decay reaches the pulp (innermost layer of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels that houses the nerves and the blood supply) causing inflammation.
Every tooth is important for chewing and hence it is always necessary to save the damaged tooth from extraction.
At Trudentz Endodontic Centre, Chandivali, Powai, painless root canal procedures/treatments are generally performed by an Endodontist who is known as a Root Canal Specialist.

The procedure involves:

· Removal of decayed and infected tooth material
· Cleaning and disinfection with advanced root canal rotary systems
· Filling and sealing with an inert material
· Restoration and crown/cap
Some cases of Root Canal treatment Can be completed in a single sitting, whereas a few cases need multiple sittings.

WHY DOES ONE NEED TO UNDERGO ROOT CANAL TREATMENT (RCT)?

Root Canal Treatment is done on a damaged, broken down or an infected tooth. Infection could be due to a cracked or broken tooth, deep decay, gum diseases, secondary decay under an old filling or trauma to a tooth. At times a Root Canal Therapy is also recommended as a preventive measure.
By performing a Root canal Procedure:
It can stop the spread of the infection and help in saving the tooth
RCT relieves the severe pain caused due to inflammation
It can help to relieve any swelling associated with the tooth
How do I know if I need a Root Canal treatment (RCT)?
Some of the following symptoms are indicative of a tooth needing Root Canal Procedure:
Toothache ranging from mild to severe. With time it may worsen. The pain typically tends to increase at night and during biting
Prolonged sensitivity or sensation in your tooth while consuming something hot or cold
Swelling in the gums
Discoloured tooth
Deep cavity or a hole in the tooth
Severely worn out teeth
An X-Ray often reveals need for an RCT.

Goal of Root Canal Therapy:

The goal of the root canal therapy is to improve the health of your damaged tooth by removing the infected nerves from your teeth through a small opening in the crown.
The canals are then sealed with special filling materials to prevent bacteria from reaching your bone.
The opening in the tooth is then filled with a restoration, and a crown/cap is placed on the tooth.

WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF NOT GETTING A ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?

The infection may increase and the pain may become unbearable
Sometimes, the pain may stop, but that is because the tooth becomes dead, but the infection may still persist.
The bacteria from infection can enter into the tissues of gum and jaw which can cause a pus-filled abscess. This can even lead to a serious condition like heart disease and stroke.

POST-TREATMENT CARE FOR ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

Do not put pressure or bite hard on the tooth. Since there is no cap on the tooth, putting pressure or biting hard food can cause damage to the tooth.
Avoid sticky, hard and crunchy food, instead chew soft food until final restoration. Eat from the unaffected side.
Do not be too harsh while brushing
Get a dental crown/cap as soon as possible as this will protect your tooth from further damage. It is mandatory to put a crown on a root canal treated tooth. At Trudentz Dental and Root Canal (RCT/MicroEndodontic) Centre, Chandivali, Powai, we offer the best dental crown and bridge options that are strong and the most esthetic.
